Experience
The film was shot entirely on location in Italy. Starting in Trapani, west Sicily. Followed by Matera and finishing the shoot with a week in Naples.
Greig Fraser chose the Alexa 65 large format camera combined with Arri DNA arge format lenses to beautify capture this film.
Due to location logistics and the quick pace of the movie Dan Carling created a new more portable single monitor onset colour and exposure management workstation. The vertical footprint workstation was often rigged along side video assist in the back of a 4x4 bing driven into position on a beach getting as close as possible to the camera positions. Wireless video was used when possible to monitor camera signal with cables running back to set for the cinematographers onset monitor.
A lot of the film is captured in magic hour so there was a lot of remote iris adjustments. Dan was constantly trying to maintain the correct exposure for Greig during this changing light period.
Dan designed the data workflow utilising the Codex Vault S to perform an onset backup of the camera originals. The Vault was setup on the truck at all times and was only a short pick up ride away. Rushes were sent to Pinewood post at lunch and wrap to create editorial files and graded dailies.
